Panel Discussion: Sound of Others

Friday, 23rd February, 3-5PM, The Anatomy Rooms

Panel Coordinator: Caroline Gausden

By raising the question of other sounds at this festival sonADA is interested in exploring and creating a platform for different voices to be heard, asking: Other than mainstream cultural and economic narratives who else speaks and how?

In order to explore this wider issue we would like to turn our focus to the question of female voice in the field of sound art. We have invited three panelists that bring different expertise and experiential knowledge to contribute to a panel session around the issue.

The Panelists

As part of this investigation we approached the Her Noise Archive in London to speak about creating a platform for missing gendered narratives creating an archive of practices that use sound to investigate social relations, inspire action or uncover hidden soundscapes. Louise Marshal (AKA Louise Gray) will speak on the archive and her research into the strategic compositional practices of female experimental musicians alongside sound artist Ji Youn Kang who has extensive experience in blending the traditional and non-traditional sounds and as a member of the group Female Effects, a project to showcase new experiments and cross fertilisations in sound produced by female composers. Rebecca Collins will also join adding her perspective as co-organiser of Women In Sound/Women On Sound, a research network which profiles and supports women working in sound and music technology. Both Rebecca Collins and Ji Youn Kang will also be performing on Friday and Saturday night respectively.
